Fellows and Scholars gather for annual policy summit

Graduate students from the nonpartisan Policy and Research Legislative Fellows (PRLF) Program and the Illini Science Policy Program (ISPP) came together for the 2025 Policy Summit, a day designed to connect academic expertise with the practical realities of public policy in Illinois. The summit engaged key stakeholders from the university and public to help attendees deepen their understanding of the legislative cycle, hone their skill in researching and drafting policy, and develop strategies to communicate with diverse audiences.

Sessions throughout the day explored themes central to the fellows’ work. Presenters shared perspectives on balancing work and life in public service, identifying professional priorities, and using data visualization to communicate findings effectively. Conversations also highlighted how to navigate today’s polarized political environment and how to serve as a bridge between communities with differing perspectives.

Over lunch, Wanda Ward, executive associate chancellor for public engagement, and Bob Flider, senior director of community and government relations for the University of Illinois (and former Illinois state legislator and director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture), joined fellows and scholars to share experiences and connect informally. Their participation emphasized the importance of relationships and mentorship in building meaningful careers at the intersection of research and policy.

The summit concluded with a sense of momentum for the year ahead. Fellows and scholars left with new insights, stronger connections, and a clearer view of how their work can contribute to policy solutions that address challenges facing Illinois communities.
